Web 2.0 Ethical Considerations and Procedures

I came across this video on Facebook today, and while all the points discussed within it are fascinating, and I believe important for all users of Web 2.0 platforms to consider, a particular moment of the video stood out to me. I see it almost as a visualisation of one of the points the module handbook touches on when discussing Web 2.0, on page 36.

At time stamp 15:55, an example Facebook post is shown, which has been used to highlight how easily personal information can be accessed in just one post. I wanted to share this video as I found it not only relevant to our discussions of ethical considerations, ethical procedures and "netiquette" when using web 2.0 platforms for our studies, but also helpful to us all as people who may use Web 2.0 platforms on a regular basis for our own personal use, or in our professional practice, in order to stay safe and aware of the dangers of Web 2.0.

Please let me know what you feel some of the negatives of Web 2.0 are, not just with regard to safety issues, but other issues you feel Web 2.0 has potentially created for us as performers and professionals.

  1. Hi Rosie,

As much as there is a lot of pros to web 2.0 there is also a negative impact that it can have not only our generation but the generation below us. One thing I remember/still do to this very day is that we 'archive' our posts/stories like why not post our photos in real time instead of saving them to a later date. I also feel like everyone is constantly trying to fit in with the latest trend or looking a certain way (like a filter). Which could leave a huge impact on our lives/self esteem. I find that this could be a point where we see people suffering from mental health, depression or even online bullying.

Even the word 'social' makes me question how social are we? Nowadays I see so many people on their phones trying to capture everything.

    1. Hi Portia!

I have to agree with you that Web 2.0 does come with many negatives, most especially for younger generations! Even though we are all aware of the use of filters, and that we are only seeing a small part of someone's life, it is easy to forget this while we scroll through social media posts!
Even using Web 2.0 as a platform to learn and network comes with problems, for example so many performers and creators work gets shared but is uncredited.
